The Double Significance of August 26th
August 26th might be a date that does not resonate with you for any particular reason. However, if you are female, you soon will understand its significance. The same is true if you are a dog lover. Due to the fact that I am both I will look at the importance of this day times two.
August 26th is Women’s Equality Day. This day is set aside to commemorate the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which was passed on August 26, 1920. This is the date that women were given the right to vote. For women this day was a long time in coming. It all started with the first women’s rights convention which took place in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848.
This special day to celebrate the equality granted to women was created by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1971. Celebrate it with your family, your friends and all of the special women in your life!
August 26th is also National Dog Day. It was a day created by the National Dog Day Foundation, and it has two goals in mind. The first is to honor all dogs as the great creatures they are, and the second is to rescue dogs that have no home and those that come from abusive homes.
The motto for the Dog Day Foundation is a very fitting one. It reads “Saving 10,000 Dogs- One Day at a Time.” This day is set aside for individuals to think about the value that dogs bring to their lives. Even if you do not have a dog of your own, you can bring love to stray dogs dogs that reside in the households of your loved ones and friends.
Not only do dogs provide love and companionship to people but they also look out for our safety and comfort us during times of pain and sorrow. With all that dogs do for people they deserve their own special day for us to appreciate what they bring to our lives.
Show a dog that it matters in whatever way you can. Help find homes for stray dogs. Always report cases of abuse. Volunteer at your local shelter. If there is an elderly individual in your neighborhood who is a dog, then offer to walk his dog in order to provide extra help for the person. Do what you can.
