picAhh, the thoughts of taking a trip during the luxurious days of a relaxed summer vacation. If you have been  dreaming of your vacation in the sunshine for a few months, now it is important that you do everything you can to make your flight as smooth as possible because let’s face it- air travel is not always idyllic!

The answer to what could go wrong is everything! There are long line-ups, weather worries, flights that don’t take off on time, and missed connections just to name a few. Here we have compiled a few tips to get your summer vacation by air off to the best start possible.

When picking your flight, depending on where you are going, it is advisable to choose as early a flight as possible. The reason for this is simple- most early morning flights are not delayed because airplanes generally stay in the airport hangars at night in order to be ready to take off on time in the morning.

Some areas are more prone to storms in the summer than are other areas. For example, in a city that often experiences thunder and lightning you are better off not planning a departure in the middle of the afternoon. In these regions the possibility of delays and/or cancelled flights is much greater.

Memorize your departure times. Double and triple check them if necessary. If you find an error after the fact, then rebooking can be a problem because so many flights are booked to capacity throughout the summer months. As well, the chance to fly standby can be poor to none.

If you have to make a connecting flight and the airplane you are on arrives late, then the chance that the second flight will be held for you is highly unlikely. This is unfortunate but true. The only instance where it might be held is if there are a number of passengers who like yourself need to make the connecting flight. If you are used to taking buses to commute to and from work, then you know the frustration of missing a connection.

The worry over connecting flights can be resolved by spending a little extra money for a direct flight where applicable. There are cases where this is not a possibility, but if it is then it is strongly recommended that you do so.
