Show Love and Appreciation on Grandparents Day
Grandparents are fantastic individuals! Mine are dearly departed, but the years I had them in my life were very good years. I cherish every moment I had with them, and I love them for all that they taught me that has helped me to live a productive and fulfilling life.
National Grandparents Day is a holiday that is celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Sunday following Labor Day. This year that day happens to fall on Sunday, September 13. Grandparents Day is also celebrated in the United Kingdom, but it is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.
In the United States, Grandparents Day began in 1978. It came about as a result of President Carter as well as the efforts of Marian McQuade from Oak Hill, West Virginia. National Grandparents Day did not begin in neighboring Canada until the 1995. In the UK it got its start in 1990.
How you choose to spend this special holiday is up to you. The manner in which you choose to show love and appreciation to your grandparents may very well depend upon where they live in relation to you. If your grandparents live close, then taking them out or cooking a meal for them might be a good idea. Or you might want to spend a day at the park or a location of their choosing. Whether it is just you and grandma and grandpa or whether you gather the whole family together you can have a fantastic day!
If your grandparent lives farther away, then a phone call is always a way to bring joy and gladness to their heart. Make them smile with a funny story or a cheerful memory.
Please note- If you are a pet lover, then Sunday, September 13 will have significance to you in another way. It is National Pet Memorial Day, which is a day set aside for all those who have lost their pets to remember their beloved animals. Reflect upon the good memories on this day. Plant a tree in memory of your pet. You might even want to volunteer at the local pet shelter to bring love to more pets in need.

A good “green” way to mark Grandparents Day on Sunday is to plant a tree in their memory.
I did this last year and was pleased that all four of my grandparents are being remembered in this way.
A website called Lasting Tribute has an offer to dedicate a tree in partnership with The Tree Appeal, for £9.99, which works out at half their usual price of £19.99.
But you have to be quick – their offer ends on October.
