Selecting Christmas Gifts for Your Children

October 28th, 2008 by Patti

When it comes to selecting gifts for your children at Christmas, it is not always the simplest of tasks. The media have a tremendous influence over young minds, so often children want whatever they see on television or whatever other kids already have. Sometimes the most popular gifts for the season and the “latest greatest” things are not necessarily what are best for the well-being of your children.

Take back the Christmas holidays by buying your child healthy gifts that are age appropriate. Educational toys, for example, rate high on the list of excellent choices of gifts for children. Select toys that teach children but also entertain them as well. Toys, such as colorful blocks and puzzles, encourage the thirst for learning in children while also putting a smile on their faces. These kinds of toys play a vital role in helping your child to learn his numbers, as well as the letters of the alphabet. It also helps him to become familiar with shapes and colors.

Books make wonderful gifts for children. Look for books that will pique your young child’s interest and always choose books that are relevant for her age group. For very young children choose books that are colorful and interesting.

Pop-up books will make your child curious to find out what is inside as will books that have lots of vibrant and fun pictures of objects they enjoy, such as animals, flowers, lakes and rivers, mountains and so on. Select books that depict happy moments and the types of messages that you want to get across. Rhyming books are another worthwhile choice for little ones. It is important that as a parent you offer support and guidance to your children as you look through and read the books you have given them for the holidays.

Choose books for older children that send positive messages about the human condition. Look for books that show people offering a helping hand to others. Also look for books that show people being kind and loving to animals.

Keep in mind the interests and individual tastes of the child you are buying a gift for. Some children are more into intellectual pursuits and like books or games while other children are more active and might prefer a toy tool set or a toy which they can use for outdoor play.
