Give the Earth a Christmas present it will appreciate this holiday season by finding smart eco-friendly
ways to reduce and reuse any number of things. Read on for some earth friendly suggestions to get you started!
Shop with your own bag(s)
When you go Christmas shopping take your own bags. If you cannot bring your own bags, then save the bags when you get home, and use them again.
Reuse Christmas wrap from last year
Instead of throwing away last year’s Christmas wrap, unwrap gifts with care, and then neatly fold up the paper to reuse the following year.
Christmas packaging
If you have gifts, such as electronics, that come with special packaging or foam, save these items for the purposes of mailing or shipping something at a later date.
Gift tags
Instead of buying gift tags use Christmas cards from the past.
Christmas postcards
Another use for old Christmas cards is to cut them in half and then use the picture portion as a postcard. Write a Christmas message on it, and send it along to a family member or friend.
Buy rechargeable batteries
Buy gifts that can be used with rechargeable batteries as opposed to the type that you use and throw away. If the person you are buying the gift for does not have a device to charge batteries for them, buy one for them as another gift.
Regift or give away
If you are given a gift that is not to your liking or you cannot use it, either wrap it up and give it away to someone else (known as regifting) or give it away to a charity.
Recycled gifts
Recycled items for gifts are becoming easier to find all of the time. Buy presents that are made from recycled materials whenever you can. Also watch that the packaging is also recycled.
Reuse your Christmas tree
If you have a real Christmas tree, then after you take it down, use it for wood chips or mulch. Another option is to use it to create an outdoor shelter for any animals that may need refuge from cold winter weather.
