As we saw last time, the lack of an established holiday in August doesn’t have to make it a no-fun month. Here are some more ways to celebrate at this end of the summer.
Craving Mexican food? Chiles nogadas are traditional on the feast of San Agustin (St. Augustine), August 28th.
It’s not too late to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th). In some countries, this was traditionally the day to bless fruits and herbs — and it’s never a bad time to send someone a basket of fruit. Just make sure they’re not away on vacation.
For birthdays this month, your family may want to try something different, like Kyle and Bryce Craig. They ask party guests to bring a donation to a good cause, instead of presents for them. This year, it was care package items for deployed soldiers. They agreed to do this for their birthdays after a promise that their parents and grandparents would still give them presents.
International Homeless Animals Day is the third Sunday in August — the 22nd this year. If you’ve been thinking about adopting a pet, this is a good time to do something about it. (If you’re not ready to adopt, ask your humane society about fostering.) You could end up with another family “birthday” to celebrate.
Yes, Labor Day is coming up — but while the long weekend is nice, it’s always a bittersweet holiday, especially for kids going back to school. So let’s celebrate summer while it’s still here.
