Keeping Your Home Safe When a Holiday is Calling Your Name!
The thought of a holiday is always something to look forward to, both for yourself and the entire family. Whether your holiday involves the beach, camping, visiting relatives or taking in the sights of a new locale, it is always exciting. As you plan your trip and pack your bags to head off, don’t forget what you are leaving behind- your home. How safe will your home be with you not around? Do you have someone you trust to look in on your home while you are on your holiday, or will it be left completely unattended? How long will you be gone?
These are all important questions to ask yourself. Forgetting to pack your sunblock can be fixed easily with a trip to any drugstore but forgetting to ensure the safety of your home when you are away could spell trouble with a terrifying capital T!
What should you do to ensure your home is left safe and sound while you are off enjoying your holiday? Read on for some helpful holiday tips …
- Write down where you are going and the dates you will be gone. Include phone numbers of hotels and flight numbers. Leave a copy for whoever will be looking in on your home when you are away. It is also smart to provide this information to a family member, friend or trusted neighbor. If an emergency arises, then you will be covered.
- Buy timers for some of your lights, and set them for different times of the day and evening.
- Buy deadbolt locks for your front and back doors that are heavy duty, grade 1 or 2. These types are made with beveled casings that will not work even if a burglar tries to use pliers.
- If you have your newspaper delivered, then cancel it for the duration of your holiday.
- Have someone pick up your mail for you while you are away.
- Don’t tell anyway you are going away except those who absolutely must know.
- Close the curtains in your downstairs rooms. If a would-be burglar cannot see through your windows, then it is a guessing game as to whether anyone is home.
- Check the safety and security of all of your windows and doors to make sure they are locked before you go away.
- Do not leave a spare key anywhere in your yard or on your step!
