Valentine's Day

dinner

A night of dining, dancing and romancing would suit you just fine. You can see it all in a romantic flash- the elegant restaurant, the candles, the filet mignon, the wine that keeps flowing and the swirl of your favorite dress. What a wonderful Valentine’s evening you have planned for yourself and your significant other. There is only one problem with your musings for the special occasion- you are living on a shoestring budget, so burgers and fries are more likely to be what shows up on your menu.

Valentine’s Day does not have to be expensive or super sophisticated to be special for the two of you. Burgers and fries from the fast food joint down the street can be just as special as steak and shrimp. Think of it as the shabby chic of eating, and go for it! Break out your best plates and silverware, light some candles, use your best placemats and your most elegant cloth napkins and enjoy a romantic evening.

To add a little more elegance to your Valentine’s Day dinner, pair your burgers and fries with a Chardonnay. A Chilean Chardonnay is a good option as is one from California. Or if you are really feeling casual then have a couple of beers with your Valentine’s Day feast. For a change of pace, choose an imported beer.

Pizza is another cheap and easy alternative that can be fancied up any way you want. Pizza is more designer today that it has ever been. Now there are more toppings and styles of pizza. For Valentine’s Day choose a pizza with the works, vegetarian, Hawaiian or meat lovers. Or order pizza from a place where you can choose all of your own toppings. Pair it with an Italian wine or some imported beer, and you are all set. Another option is to drink mineral water or sparkling water with your food. Pour the water into wine glasses and add a slice of lemon and you have instant pizzazz!

Other shabby chic food options to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the one you love include Chinese food, Thai food, Indian food, and fish and chips. Whatever types of take out are available in your area are all good ideas to share with the love of your life. Never let that put a dent in your creative ability to plan a fantastic Valentine’s meal!
