There may not be a stat holiday in August where you live — or if there is, it may not inspire any party ideas. Still, summer is a good time to celebrate, so here are some little-known occasions in August and some ways you may want to observe them. These come from social media marketer Lorenzo Dickerson.
The month starts off with some self-explanatory days to celebrate: National Raspberry Cream Pie Day (the 1st), National Ice Cream Sandwich Day (the 2nd), National Watermelon Day (the 3rd), National Mustard Day (the first Saturday in August — the 7th this year. Might want to put some hot dogs under that mustard!), National S’mores Day (the 10th — you can build a campfire in your backyard if it’s legal, unlike in my town), and National Creamsicle Day (the 14th).
August 9th is Dollar Day — no, not what it sounds like, but the day the U.S. dollar was created. Try giving a party with food and supplies entirely from the dollar store. The 16th is Julia Child’s birthday — you may not feel up to cooking a French dinner, but you and your friends can watch Julie and Julia. Another possible campfire night is the 30th: Toasted Marshmallow Day. Right after that comes National Trail Mix Day, no fire required.
Some occasions cry out for an open mic night: National Tell a Joke Day (the 16th), Bad Poetry Day (the 18th), and Strange Music Day (the 24th). Who knows? If everyone has a good time, you may end up celebrating one of these holidays every August.
