Halloween comes from the ancient Celtic harvest festival of Samhain (which is pronounced Sow-en or sow-in). The festival marked the end of the summer season and the start of a new year, commencing November 1st. It got its start in Ireland and ancient Britain over 2,000 years ago where it was believed that spirits of the dead revisited their former homes in the shape of ghosts, goblins, witches and other scary figures.
It was during the 9th century that the Catholic Church declared November 1st to be “All Saints Day” (or “all-hallowmas”) and October 31st became “All Hallows Eve”. October
